Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

back

This image was captured by the photographer Ryan Lockard of a performer at a club/concert setting. I have chosen this image as there is a clear subject that is the main attention of the image as they are in the centre of the frame and everybody else is facing them, this guides our eyes directly towards them. I also enjoy the busy subject matter of the club-like setting as I find that this photographer has managed to capture the raw energy and positive emotion through this image by capturing a wide range of people’s facial expressions. This perfectly places the audience into the image as the subject matter will be recognisable for a lot of people as this setting is something that a wide range of people will have experienced at least once in their lives.

For me, this image perfectly captures digital culture as we can see that nearly everybody in the frame has their phone out to take a picture or video of what is going on. I feel like this very accurately reflects the modern nature of attending events like this as members of the audience all feel the desperate need to record everything to post it on their social medias, to show their friends or just for the memories. I think everybody has done this at some point, I know that I definitely have, as photography and videography has become a very popular way for people to relive these exciting events. Overall, this image demonstrates the modern society’s need to upload everything online and to make their own ‘digital lives’ look perfect. I think as times continue to move forward we will continue to see people photographing at events like this as it has become so widely accessible to the general public. I don’t particularly think that this is a terrible thing, but I feel like people are more socially aware of cameras and people constantly recording them or people recording themselves to make their lives look as extravagant as possible.
