Orientalism and the Other

back

I have chosen this image as it is still very topical and relevant today as this image was taken only 9 years ago in 2017 when Trump was in his second year of his first term as President of the United States. His election had divided the general public worldwide as people were sick and tired of his racist remarks and demands for fighting against immigration, which is never really a problem but people blame immigrants and ethnic minorities for all of their personal issues. For me, this image represents not ‘the other’ but instead a union of people who are all fighting against the portrayal of people as being ‘other’. In other words, this image represents how as a nation, we can fight back against damaging stereotypes and stop presenting one group of people as being better than the others. I was also moved when I saw this image as it is just as, if not even more, topical now with how much hate the far right is spreading with help from Trump, Farage and Tommy Robinson. These key figures have divided the nation but united the rest of us to fight against their racist propaganda and make our country as inclusive as it once was.
