Regarding the Pain of Others

back

This image was taken by Philip Jones Griffiths. It was taken during the Vietnam War during the battle for Saigon in 1968. I chose this image as I found it striking how the emotions on the mother’s face show distress and the child is quite clearly clueless as to what is going on. This informs the audience as to what might be going on, especially when applied to the context of the Vietnam war, we can understand that these civilians might be threatened by the American forces. This would explain why the mother looks terrified and the son looks calm as he may be too young to understand what is going on. It was taken as part of a documentary series by Griffiths that documented the Vietnam war to show the true story of the horrors that happened. The image has been taken as a close up on eye-level with the subjects meaning the photographer will have got quite in their faces. The subject’s don’t appear to be paying attention to the camera being there which means it may have been taken as a very candid image with no serious planning. I think this image is a true depiction of the subjects as they are being photographed in their natural locations with no obvious interference from the photographer.
